Don’t get me started on this.

    “Quaecumque sunt vera…”

  • Lavona

the one advantage of being mobility challenged is that the priests/deacons bring me the Eucharist in the pew where I do get to be kneeling and not have to deal with the “paw” issue.

  • saintos

Lavona, sorry to learn of the mobility challenge but sure appreciate your spirit.

  • And no more “lick of peace” either.

  • Yeah. Our diocese, apparently while we were on vacation/holidays, decided we all had to take Communion in the hand – and so – it’s sad. They didn’t MAKE us do that during “SARS” as far as I recall it was optional – but anyhow – I had to teach my son how to take it in the hand – I hope he doesn’t forget how to receive on the tongue when the h1n1 farce is over…
I gave your website address to Jeff, Saintos.

I’d begin, but I have a 2000 word essay to write between now and Tuesday and it’s not on liturgical theology.

  • As one who (for reasons too detailed to go into in the commbox) is unable to attend mass or receive Eucharist on a regular basis, I’m too thankful for opportunity to receive to think about how it is received. But I should probably keep that to myself… ;)

That aside, I do prefer to receive on the tongue, but it just hasn’t been an issue for me to receive in hand. Whether or not it’s the decision I would have made, isn’t there a certain grace to be found in the obedience? Or am I missing something?

    • saintos

There is the matter of obedient and grace found within it and there is the matter of the, I think, bowing to hype which really seems quite ridiculous and there is strong evidence for in the hand being no more, perhaps less, hygienic than on the tongue. But, with tears in my eyes I have been obedient. This past Sunday the guest celebrant touched my hand with his hand – though I was offering my hands in the prescribed and proper manner – so, there goes that theory. I appreciate your comment my friend.

  • As if Jesus can’t or won’t keep HIS BODY, BLOOD, SOUL AND DIVINITY germ free? I scratch my head in disbelief. The stupidity of us hyper paranoid humans is astounding.

    • saintos

It’s been explained to me that while the consecration host indeed changes in form and is literally our Lord it none the less retains its essential substance and is bread and therefore can carry germs. I confess, with all due respect to the dear priest who explained it thus, that I found myself in a state of confusion. Flu season comes every year and now that the WHO has redefined (for whatever reason and conspiracy theories aside) the parameters for what a pandemic is my fear is that each year, for half a year, i.e. flu season, we will be subject to growing in our submission and obedience to the Lord but not because of something substantial but predicated on misinformation and hyper reaction. Are we more than overcomers or not, this is my question?

  • Of course, as my hubby said, many did die during the plague…but I said, “was it from receiving communion? Or was it those that did not? I know if one is sick, bad cold, etc. probably not advisable to drink from the cup…and if you’re hacking up your lungs, then maybe receive in the hand, but then again, how many DON’T die? I mean what are the odds exactly? Does it have to do with ‘fear’ in receiving? How come priests aren’t wearing surgical gloves by now, huh? I have seen the EM using Purell but I’ve heard that doesn’t work right away. It takes 30 minutes, and shouldn’t be rubbed into the hands like lotion but allowed to dry. Maybe we should be like the protestants and pick our own out? But then we contaminate all the rest potentially. Oh bother! Maybe Communion should be put on hold until all potential danger is wiped out…what to do, what to do?

    • saintos

Each time I approach the Mass I find myself in turmoil…this is not a good and holy thing…no Sam I am, I do not like green eggs and ham…or this. I tried to express it lightly in a comic but underneath it’s not funny in any way for me. May God grant us grace, both laity and our beloved clergy. I wonder…does the Pope serve in the hand during this time of pN1H1 and why is it, if this is a real pandemic are the TLM folks allowed to continue to receive on the tongue? I am not a know it all convert. I am still a very new Catholic, four years, and have much to learn and so far to grow in my likeness of Christ.
